About this Minicourse

World Culture through Martial Arts

Leader: Trevor Calvert

The world’s cultures are as fascinating as they are complex. We learn about them in many ways: food, language, political and historical analysis, and martial arts! The Bay Area is home to more diverse martial art schools than most places in the world, and we will bring these arts to MA! This minicourse is designed for students interested in learning about different cultures and combining philosophy with movement. Each day we will take a two-hour martial art class, learn a little about each culture in general, watch examples of the art, and discuss what we have discovered. We will study Brazil’s art Capoeira, China’s Tai Chi and Wing Chun, Japan’s Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu, and Indonesia’s Pukulon. Along the way we will find out what makes each art an expression of the people who developed it, and maybe even gain a little enlightenment along the way.

This will be an engaging and active minicourse full of awesome learning for anyone who loves martial arts, movement, and discovering new ways of thinking.

What you need: Loose, comfortable clothing which permit movement. A water bottle. That’s it.

Please keep you finger-nails short and clean.
